Bea Ford, a young doctor born into poverty, rescues an elderly woman on her way to the city after being cast out by her mentor. In gratitude, the woman adopts Bea as her granddaughter. This leads Bea to meet her new adoptive father, Jim Hark, the city’s wealthiest man, who is confined to a wheelchair by a mysterious ailment.
